Gallstones are made mainly of cholesterol, bilirubin, and calcium salts, with smaller amounts of protein and other materials. In Western countries, essentially all gallstones, whether cholesterol or pigmented, arise in the gallbladder. In Asia, a significant fraction of pigmented stones originates in the bile ducts. In Western countries, cholesterol is the principal constituent of over three-quarters of gallstones.
