Anatomy and Physiology Course

Aims of Programme: the Anatomy and Physiology course exists to enable students to:

  • Apply anatomical and physiological nomenclature to all studies of biological medicine
  • Understand the basic structure and function of the body in considerable detail

Intended Learning Outcomes and the means by which they are achieved and demonstrated:

Knowledge and understanding:

At the end of the course students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the basic principles of anatomy and physiology
  • deepen their knowledge further by studying more detailed texts
  • have a full understanding of the topography of organs and organ systems in the body
  • examine blood tests and understand the results and how these relate to various physiological systems

Students will know and understand:

  • all anatomical structures and their topography in the body
  • all physiological systems and their basic functioning and pathology
  • both micro and macro levels of anatomy and physiology

Cognitive / Intellectual Skills:

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand all the basic principles of anatomy and physiology as it applies to the human being
  • understand and identify visually all diagrams of the body and their structures in 3-dimensions
  • understand how living things are organized and the properties we share with animals, plants and even bacteria.
  • Understand the common vocabulary pertinent to anatomy and physiology and its correct pronunciation.

Achievement of Learning Outcomes

The intended learning outcomes (above) are achieved using the following teaching and learning strategies.

Online material:

  • Many colours illustrated diagrams and photographs to make learning more visual
  • 3-D paintings make the transition from text to actual anatomical structures easier to understand
  • Understand the numerous feedback systems such as receptors, control centres, and effectors and their role in controlling physiological conditions
  • Quizzes to help students opportunities to assess their knowledge

Tutoring:

  • All students have a tutor available whom they can contact with questions in case they get stuck

Course assignments:

  • The course assignments or quizzes allow the students to revise each section of the course before moving on to the next.

Programme structures and requirements, levels, modules, credits and awards

  • There is no prerequisite study required for this module.
  • This module consists of 25 lessons covering all the body systems and their organisation in the human body.
  • There are assignments consisting of 10 true/false or multiple-choice questions after each of the 25 lessons, making a total of 25 assignments.
  • The grades for each assignment go towards the final mark.
  • The Final Exam at the end of the course is taken online and is timed. It consists of 60 questions, all of which have been taken from the assignments.
  • Assignments and the final exam are equally weighted so the majority of marks towards the final grade do not come from the final exam but from the assignments.
